It is with sadness in our hearts that we inform you that a colleague, teacher, mentor and scientist left us on 13 April 2024 after a serious illness at the age of 73

prof. RNDr. Vladimír Sklenář, DrSc.

Medallion

Prof. Vladimír Sklenář was born in Brno on 16 April 1951. He graduated in Physical Chemistry at Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Brno, where he received the RNDr degree for his rigorous thesis in electrochemistry in 1975.

During his many years at the Institute of Instrumentation of the Czech Academy of Sciences, he focused on experimental NMR spectroscopy techniques. He expanded his knowledge during foreign stays in the USA at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD and the University of California, Los Angeles, CA.

No description

At the Marion Merrell Dow Research Institute in Strasbourg, France, he continued to develop nuclear magnetic resonance methods and their application to study biologically important molecules. Here, his most famous method, "WATER suppression by GrAdient Tailored Excitation", was developed, which has reached more than 3500 citations.

After his return to the Czech Republic in 1995, he led the NMR Spectroscopy Laboratory at the Physical Chemistry Department at the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University. He started building with Prof. Jaroslav Koca National Centre for Biomolecular Research (NCBR), where he was Deputy Director and Head of the Laboratory of Structure and Dynamics of Biomolecules for many years.

Through his dedication and the support of the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC) project, he built and transformed the Josef Dadok NMR Centre into a world-class facility. His leadership also led to forming a team of top experts, expanding the laboratory's expertise into various research areas, from small organic molecules to the study of biomolecules. From 2011 to 2016, he was the head of the Centre for Structural Biology at CEITEC MU. In 2012, he became the chairman of the executive committee of the Czech Infrastructure for Integrative Structural Biology - CIISB.

During his scientific career, he has published 148 original scientific papers with a citation record exceeding 10,000 citations.
