How Can You Arrange an Internship Abroad During Your Ph.D.?
An international experience is an important part of doctoral studies. It will allow you to get to know a new research environment, establish international collaborations, learn new methods, and gradually become an independent researcher.
- Explore Opportunities for Stays Abroad
- Find out which type of mobility best suits your research and the stage of your doctoral studies.
- For example, you can go on:
- research internship
- study abroad program
- work placement
- professional course or training program
- summer school
- When making your selection, consider in particular the host institution’s area of specialization, the duration of the stay, the appropriate timing, and funding options.
- Consult with your advisor
- Always consult with your advisor first regarding your plans for a stay abroad.
- Together, clarify the following:
- Where? – Which institution is best suited for your research?
- When? – At what stage of your doctoral studies will the stay be most beneficial?
- For how long? – What length of stay aligns with your project and the requirements of your program?
- With what goal? – What do you hope to gain during your stay - a new method, data, collaboration, or, for example, experience with a different research environment?
- Contact your program coordinator
- Be sure to inform the program coordinator of your doctoral program about your planned stay.
- The coordinator can help you verify whether your planned stay meets the requirements of your degree program and how to properly document it administratively.
- Arrange Funding for Your Stay
- Doctoral students, advisors, and the faculty can all contribute to funding a stay abroad. Various scholarship and mobility programs or research project funds can be used to finance your stay.
- Start exploring funding options well in advance. Individual programs have different conditions and application deadlines.
- Most mobility programs offer scholarship opportunities, and in some cases, individual funding sources can be combined.
- Doctoral students may also apply for a faculty scholarship from Program A.6 - Scholarship Program to Support Doctoral Student Mobility.
Are you also a faculty employee?
If you have a position at the faculty or are working on a research project, you must also discuss your planned stay abroad with:
- the project principal investigator,
- your immediate supervisor,
- and the Human Resources Department.
A stay abroad may affect your employment contract, business travel, or the use of project funds; therefore, it is advisable to address these issues before you actually depart.
International Experience as Part of the Ph.D. Program
nternational participation in scientific collaboration is an integral part of doctoral education. In practice, this is primarily achieved through an international internship lasting at least one month.
This requirement is based on Government Regulation No. 274/2016 Coll. on Standards for Accreditation in Higher Education (Part II, Chapter II, Section H, Point I.3).
A study abroad stay is not merely a formal obligation. Above all, it is an opportunity to gain experience, build professional networks, and develop scientific independence, which you will utilize throughout your future academic or professional career.
