Congratulations to our two PhD students Alica Laníková (Biomolecular Chemistry and Bioinformatics) and Jan Šmeringai (Genomics and Proteomics), who succeeded in the PhD Talent competition and won an additional scholarship funded by JCMM.

From α-Synuclein Structure to Early Diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease

Pavle Križan and Jozef Hritz from NCBR contributed to a review highlighting recent advances in understanding α-synuclein structure and aggregation. The study shows how these insights support the development of ultrasensitive diagnostic methods for earlier and more accurate detection of synucleinopathies.

Choosing the right tool for protein structure prediction

Anna Hýsková, Eva Maršálková, and Petr Šimeček compared the accuracy and speed of AlphaFold2, ESMFold, and OmegaFold for protein structure prediction. Their study shows when the superior accuracy of AlphaFold2 justifies its computational cost and when faster alternatives are sufficient.

ACC III featured on the cover of the 2026 NAR Web Server Issue

Atomic Charge Calculator III, developed by the Structural Bioinformatics research group, was published in the NAR Web Server Issue 2026 and featured on the issue cover.

Dean’s Awards 2026

Dean Luděk Blaha ceremoniously presented the Dean’s Awards 2026. Five NCBR laureates received awards: Martin Kopecký (Bioinformatics) in the category of Best Student in a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree Programme, Dr. Aneta Kozeleková (DSP Life Sciences) and Dr. Ondřej Helia (DSP Genomics and proteomics) in the category Best Student in a Doctoral Degree Programme. We congratulate all the award winners and thank them for their efforts, which contribute greatly to the reputation of our department.
