The National Centre for Biomolecular Research (NCBR) is a department at the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University in Brno. Our research centre is located in the modern premises of the University Campus Bohunice, with the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC) and the Faculty of Medicine. This unique synergy and state-of-the-art equipment allows us to conduct cutting-edge research in the fields of bio-omics and structural biology. Our research integrates experimental techniques with computer simulations and bioinformatic analyses. At the Centre, we support talented students at all levels of study (undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral), including mentoring secondary school students in Students` Professional Activity (SPA) projects.

I was afraid of programming before the semester started, but fortunately that’s taken into account in Bioinformatics, says a first-year student

Štěpán Kubíček studies Bioinformatics at Masaryk University, a joint degree programme of the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Informatics. “In my final year of secondary school, I wasn’t completely sure what I actually wanted to study,” he explains. He has always enjoyed natural sciences and was also drawn to working in research, so he chose a field that allows him to combine both. Thanks to the possibility of specialization starting as early as the second semester, he believes Bioinformatics is suitable both for enthusiasts of natural sciences and for those who are more interested in programming.

Directors of the RECETOX and NCBR Centres Reappointed, Department of Geological Sciences to Be Led by Jaromír Leichmann

At the beginning of the year, three prominent figures will take up leadership roles at departments of the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University. Jana Klánová has been reappointed Director of the RECETOX Centre, while Michaela Wimmerová will continue as Director of the National Centre for Biomolecular Research. Jaromír Leichmann, who is stepping down from his role as Vice-Dean for Development and Quality, will become Director of the Department of Geological Sciences, a role he previously held from 2007 to 2010.

Masaryk University’s Bioskop opens new premises

Today, the Bioskop Science Education Centre at Masaryk University’s Faculty of Science celebrated the opening of its newly modernised premises at the Bohunice University Campus (Pavilion E24). This expansion will significantly enhance the centre’s capabilities in providing practical education in the natural and medical sciences to children, students and the general public.

National Centre for Biomolecular Research launches 4GLYCO: a platform for the commercial use of lectins

In September 2025, the National Centre for Biomolecular Research launched 4GLYCO, a platform dedicated to the commercial sale of lectins – specialized proteins capable of recognizing and binding carbohydrates. The platform builds on more than 25 years of lectin research by Michaela Wimmerová research group and is part of the faculty’s ongoing efforts to turn research discoveries into practical applications and support technology transfer.
