The National Centre for Biomolecular Research (NCBR) is a department at the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University in Brno. Our research centre is located in the modern premises of the University Campus Bohunice, with the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC) and the Faculty of Medicine. This unique synergy and state-of-the-art equipment allows us to conduct cutting-edge research in the fields of bio-omics and structural biology. Our research integrates experimental techniques with computer simulations and bioinformatic analyses. At the Centre, we support talented students at all levels of study (undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral), including mentoring secondary school students in Students` Professional Activity (SPA) projects.

Darja Klementová won the national ‘České hlavičky’ (Little Czech Mind) award

Darja Klementová, who comes from an artistic family, has also been interested in nature and the human body since she was a child. For her work under the supervision of Marek Šebesta, which has been focused on the role of kinases from the CK1 family in the Wnt/β-catenin cell signalling pathway, and the potential application of these findings in the treatment of leukaemia, she won the national ‘České hlavičky’ (Little Czech Mind) award.

How Dicer Works: RNA Scissors in Mammals

This discovery offers a new way of defence against RNA viruses in humans. David Zapletal, Karel Kubíček, and Richard Štefl from NCBR and CEITEC Masaryk University (MU) and Petr Svoboda from the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Czech Academy of Sciences (IMG CAS) and their colleagues have revealed the unique mechanism of action of mammalian Dicer. The research results were published on 3 November 2022 in the prestigious scientific journal Molecular Cell.

An interview with Dr. Dominik Hrebik, NCBR alumni

Right after graduating, he took off to Germany to join the John Briggs lab at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Munich. He works within the research department Cell, and Virus Structure and his research is focused on the structural description of the virus life cycle within the cellular context. He is passionate about working with an electron microscope, cryo-EM data processing, and analysing the resulting structural models.
